MVC's Responsible Care Initiative - 2010



Various Management Practices of the Responsible Care (RC) Codes that were developed in the previous years were continuously implemented in 2010. Different action plans related to the Responsible Care Codes were deliberated upon and aligned during the annual planning session held at the start of the year.

These activities were then implemented with significant accomplishments such as those indicated in the table below.

Implementation of the RC Management Practices is evident through the approval of MVC’s continued use of the QMS 9001 and EMS 14001 certification in 2010.

The following are the additional practices that have been put in-place in MVC-Iligan in 2010

Community Awareness & Emergency Response
  • Hosted various plant tours for students of different schools from Iligan City, Cagayan De Oro City, Bukidnon and Davao City.
  • Various emergency response drills were conducted, including drills for chemical spills, fires, and earthquakes.
  • Basic First Aid was taught to 36 residents from Purok 13 and Purok Tonggo, the neighboring communities of MVC.
Process Safety
  • Hazard identification and risk assessment were conducted for the safe production of MVC’s products in the Iligan Plant.
  • Operational control procedures were documented and implemented for significant risks and hazards in the production process.
Distribution Safety
  • Product handling training was organized for 46 participants, which included truckers, drivers and helpers, to upgrade their skills in handling emergencies during transport of MVC products.
  • Chlorine Safe Handling seminars and workshops were held for the employees of MVC’s customers from the water utility industry.
  • Hazard identification and risk assessment were administered for the safe distribution of MVC’s products.
  • Operational control procedures were documented and implemented for significant risks and hazards in product distribution.
Product Stewardship
  • Technical services and product-handling seminars were offered to customers to provide information on the proper use and risks associated with the use of MVC’s products.
  • Technical services were provided to customers for the treatment and disposal of their spent caustic soda.
Environment, Health and Safety
  • MVC Iligan plant achieved the target of 500 days No Lost Time Accident on April 20, 2010.
  • Hazard identification and risk assessment was conducted for all support services in the Iligan plant like plant maintenance, office work, projects, etc.
  • Operational control procedures were documented and implemented for significant risks and hazards in all support services.
  • The Annual Physical Examination produced a 99% turn out among employees.
  • A work order system for hazardous areas and activities was documented and implemented for the safe conduct of work in identified hazardous work areas.
  • Basic Life Support Training and Fracture Bandaging was also conducted for 27 participants, which included employees, contractors, and security guards.
Pollution Prevention
  • Supervised a Solid Waste Management Program Inspection and clean up drive around company premises with employee volunteers and contractors.
  • Participated in the Iligan citywide coastal clean up drive, in cooperation with MVC volunteers, community residents, and local government representatives.
  • MVC Iligan was audited and approved by TUV-SUD for the continued use of its Environmental Management System certification.
  • The “one tree per employee” tree-planting program was successfully accomplished with a total of 120 trees planted.
  • Achieved 30% conversion of R22 refrigerant with RS44 in air conditioning units.
